A poem for a friend everyone wishes they had.
I’m not sure if I will every actually have the words to express what this incredible human means to me. While participating in a recent poetry workshop I was given a prompt to “write a poem for a friend you adore.” I immediately knew who this poem would be about, and in less than 24 hours had the poem written. I can become obsessed with editing, and while this piece probably needs more work, I am so happy that I’m stopping here. This is to you my sweet friend, you really are timeless like Audrey.
She welcomes the sun’s warming tentacles
into every conversation
where her words drip honey alive
vibrating truth your lungs lap up thirsty for
she’s timeless like Audrey Hepburn’s
cigarette casing craving her lips
like the tickle of flirting swing dancer skirts
flirting with swing dancer hips
she loves as endlessly as Spock’s ramblings
and a tribble’s incessant hunger-provoking reproducing
she wraps the night into a breeze
quilted with Milky Way freckles
and whispers to shaking, dirty ear drums
Never let go of everything you are ever meant to be
she is oxygen meeting blood
Montana-wide lungs gasping
boots on shiny leaves chirping
huckleberry-stained flowered princess crowns
Mr. Darcy binge watching
and anything else you have ever needed
and when shoelaces betray ankles with lies
tripping toes on memories
breathing with the fire that still stings
she ties butterflies to her words
and enjoys untangling your snarling thoughts
every thought fights to flirt with her tongue
every laugh glues itself sticky between
wispy bang flips and rolling throat giggles
every poem circles around every line
too shy to mean what she deserves
and if these tears could tear out of their casings
they would scream her wonders to the dust
until it settled on every broken heart
binding up the invisible
with the bravery it took for her to be seen
she is timelessly fierce in her love for you
she is sound, and she is song
and the beautiful waltz
continually existing between the two
